I think I finally found out why I don't like "Call me Maybe". Right now, my girlfriend (if you can call her that) is a Disney Store doll of Merida. [link] If I'm going to live vicariously through pop music (or any sort of music for that matter), I'd like some excitement in my music. I love "Come on Eileen" because the message is that those two are going to blow the dull little town they live in and go live a life of adventure and romance. I don't enjoy "You're the one that I want" as much, but the very name of the song makes it clear that this couple is meant to be. Call me Maybe is about meeting a boy, and that's it. The song doesn't feel as confident as it wants to be. Even by the standards of crush songs, "Call me Maybe" plays it so coy, making it seem like giving a boy your phone number is true love and ripped jeans are the pinnacle of sexiness.

That isn't even the biggest problem. I may not like Disney stars, but most of them don't know how bad their songs are. Carly Rae Jepsen is actually 26 years old. That is an age that tells me that this song is shallow, she knows it, and she wants you to know it. You see, when pop stars know how bad their songs are, it just makes them more hateable.

And it's interesting that you compare this to Friendship is Magic. I'm sure most people in the mainstream would tell Bronies to grow up and stop liking girly and childish things. When they heard the equally girly Call me Maybe though, they went OMG THIS IS THE PERFECT POP SONG!!!!!! (okay, maybe not exactly like that, just in a more mature way) It would be one thing if Jepsen made this song actively trying to reach a demographic outside of the standard for teen pop the way Lauren Faust made Friendship is Magic to get demographics beyond just little girls. Unfortunately, everything about this song tells me this was an ordinary pop song that just happened to get massive because of one mention from Justin Bieber.
